FIRST VISITS TO SAWMILLS IN NAVARRE TO PROMOTE THE STRUCTURAL CLASSIFICATION OF BEECHWOOD

Maderas Usarbarrena and Maderas Legarda, pioneers in exploring the implementation of this innovative technology.

The LIFE HAYA project has started a series of visits to sawmills in Navarre with the aim of informing and promoting the implementation of structural grading tools for beech wood. This technology, recently developed by the Fagus Operational Group, will allow beech wood to be marketed as structural wood with CE marking, a milestone that has not been possible in the sector to date.

Currently, no company in Spain has structural grading systems applied to beech wood, which limits its possibilities in the construction market. With this new technology, the LIFE HAYA project seeks to capitalise on the progress and facilitate its adoption in hardwood primary processing companies.

Three people in a sawmill in Navarre look at technical equipment on a table with computers and sensors, surrounded by piles of beech wood.

The first visits were made to two Navarrese companies with a long history in beech processing: Maderas Usarbarrena, in Eulate, and Maderas Legarda, in Legarda. Both companies specialise in products for carpentry, furniture and furniture parts, and have shown interest in exploring new opportunities for diversification through the incorporation of structural timber.

The final objective of the project is to reach at least 15 companies interested in implementing this technology, thus contributing to the valorisation of beech as a forest resource and the strengthening of its value chain.
