THE BEECH BECOMES THE PROTAGONIST OF A DAY HELD IN EZCARAY

On 25 June, Ezcaray Town Council held the conference ‘THE BEECH: Forestry and new uses for its wood,’ organised by the Regional Ministry of Agriculture of La Rioja in collaboration with the LIFE Haya project on sustainable management of the beech tree.

The general director of Natural Environment and Landscape, Ignacio Saénz de Urturi, was in charge of opening this meeting, while the mayor of Ezcaray, Diego Bengoa, closed a day that ended with a colloquium where the speakers and the public could exchange views and resolve doubts.

José Luis Villanueva, coordinator of the LIFE Haya_ Hardwood For The Home project and as representative of Cesefor, one of the project partners, officially presented this initiative and the results of another similar project “GO Fagus” also focused on the revaluation of beech. Markel Arriolabengoa and Aitor Kortabarria from Tantai Baso Jabe Koop discussed about forestry close to nature, while Ana Belén Noriega, general director-CEO of PEFC Spain, addressed sustainable forest certification and its relevance for small local companies. Félix Flüshöh of Grupo Gámiz presented current trends in wood construction, highlighting beech and oak products.

The event was attended by representatives of the forestry sector, municipalities, forest owners and environmental associations. This event proved to be an enriching experience, aimed at achieving the objectives of climate change mitigation in beech forests through the analysis of various initiatives and mechanisms for forest sustainability.
