Work begins on sawing and performance evaluation of the life beech project

Maderas Legarda transforms the first batch of beech from the demonstration stand in Baraibar (Navarra)

The LIFE HAYA project takes a step forward with the start of sawmilling and yield analysis of the timber harvested from its demonstration stands.

Maderas Legarda, located in Navarra, has been in charge of sawing the first batch: a lorry loaded with beech wood from the Baraibar stand, the second in which silvicultural treatments have been applied and the first to provide wood destined for sawing.

Beech logs laid out on the ground to be graded by a specialist technician

This phase is part of one of the key actions of the project, focused on improving efficiency in the transformation of solid beech biomass on an industrial scale. In each stand, the carbon flow from the trunk to the final products is analysed, including also the by-products generated in the process.

To carry out these tasks, Cesefor technical staff travelled to the Maderas Legarda facilities. There, the process began with a visual classification of the 34 logs that made up the batch. Subsequently, they proceeded to the sawing and the aesthetic and structural classification of the planks obtained, in addition to quantifying the by-products and waste generated.

Exploded pieces of beech logs, flattened into several blocks and arranged for analysis by a technician.

With this work, the LIFE HAYA project continues to advance its objective of demonstrating the technical and environmental feasibility of sustainable beech harvesting.
